The desert around Swakopmund is covered by enormous linear dunes that although from a distance look lifeless in fact, support a complex eco-system capable of extracting moisture from the coastal fogs that can roll up to 30km inland.

Backed by the haunting Namib Desert and facing the Atlantic Ocean, Swakopmund offers visitors a rather surreal African experience. Attractions include the Namib-Naukluft Park, one of the most bewitching desert wilderness areas in Africa and just outside of town you will find a seemingly never-ending series of bizarre, barren hills that resemble a moon landscape. Unusual plants in the area include the giant welwitschia mirabilis or living fossils as they are often called. These two-leafed plants grow up to two metres above the ground, the oldest one of more than 2 000 years old and the youngest a mere 500 years.
