Skeleton Coast

Once the entire Namibian coastline bore the name ‘Skeleton Coast’ due to the high number of shipwrecks and washed up whales found along its treacherous shores. Today it refers to the Skeleton Coast National Park which stretches along a third of Namibia’s coastline.

Incentives to Travel to the Skeleton Coast:

The Kunene River runs through the park to reach the sea and succours a host of wild animals along the way. The ones to be especially wary of are the crocodiles who live in great numbers at the river mouth. Unusual animals include Namibia’s famous desert-adapted elephant and the endemic armour-plated lizard. Commonly sighted animals include lion, cheetah, black rhino and a range of antelope species.

A great photographic destination particularly for the colonies of Cape fur seals that thrive here as well as the many shipwrecks found along the shore. Some geological features that are unique to the area include gemstone beaches filled with polished semi-precious stones and the salt pans where the salt crystals are embedded up to 25m in the earth.

Visit the massive sand dunes in the north of the park, an extremely dramatic sight as the dunes are constantly shifting shape due to the wind.  During your stay in this region you can visit the clay castles of Hoarusib Canyon, the Messum Crater and the Lichen plains.
